James (Jim) Smith III serves as the Director of Finance at Darrow School, overseeing the financial operations and business office functions to ensure the school’s long-term sustainability. With over 20 years of experience in financial management, accounting, and business operations, Jim brings a strong background in strategic planning, budgeting, and financial analysis. Before joining Darrow, Jim held leadership positions in corporate finance, including roles as Controller, CFO, and Senior Financial Analyst. His expertise spans financial reporting, auditing, contract negotiation, and operational efficiency. He has also played a key role in business development, managing financial structures, tax compliance, and human resources in prior organizations. At Darrow, Jim works closely with the Head of School, Board of Trustees, and senior leadership team to develop and implement financial policies that support the school’s mission. He manages budgeting, tuition revenue administration, payroll, and compliance, ensuring transparency and fiscal responsibility. His leadership in financial stewardship helps Darrow maintain a strong foundation for academic excellence and student success. Jim lives on the Rensselaer Plateau in Poestenkill, New York. He has coached youth soccer in the past and is currently an archery coach at the St. Pius X school in Loudonville. He is dedicated to supporting Darrow’s vibrant community through sound financial management and strategic planning.
