🌲🔥🏕️ Our ninth-graders recently took part in Fresh Fire—a transformative Darrow tradition of camping in the Vermont woods for three days and two nights. It is an excellent opportunity for them to bond, learn outdoor skills, perform community service projects, and gain self-sufficiency. (However, it can be argued the Class of 2027 had it pretty easy this year, with only one night of rain! 🌧️)

🏀🦆🤩 We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Former NBA Player Antonio Anderson as the new Head Coach for the Boys Prep Basketball Program!
Hailing from New England, Coach Anderson enjoyed a successful college basketball career at the University of Memphis. Under the tutelage of renowned coach John Calipari, Anderson exhibited his skills in 110 games for the Memphis Tigers during the school's most triumphant era, culminating in the 2008 NCAA Final Four appearance and National Championship game. Anderson is the only player in Memphis history to record more than 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists. Upon his graduation, Anderson went on to play for NBA teams, the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Charlotte Bobcats, before transitioning to coaching.

At the end of last year, Alumni Calvin Kertzmann '20 returned to the Mountainside to use his former high school as a backdrop for his Emerson College senior thesis, @preservationfilm. We welcomed faculty back to the Mountainside this week, kicking off the 2023 -2024 school year. Head of School Andy Vadnais shared his vision during our opening meeting. He encouraged us to embrace change and welcome the fresh perspective of new faculty and administrators at Darrow. Vadnais emphasized our commitment to growth and how it is at the heart of everything we do, from community programs to discussions and events. Together, we will adopt a growth mindset 🌱 and share our ideas for propelling Darrow forward.

Hands-to-Work has been a vital component of the Darrow experience since 1932. Each Wednesday, crews head out to gain leadership skills through service and learn the importance of seemingly mundane work as an ode to the Shakers, whose land we occupy. 👩🌾 Keeping with tradition, we are excited to welcome a new Director of our Hands-to-Work Program, Jennifer Leahey, aka "Farmer Jen." Today we celebrated the wide range of diversity and heritage in our community. Students came into school in cultural attire, bearing national flags and preparing cultural foods. Diversity Prefects and Coordinators set up workshops, fair tables, and a fashion show for students to come together and learn about our diverse cultural heritage.
Ms. Tinkle's Sports and Society class went to NYC yesterday to visit the Jackie Robinson Museum and see a Mets game! Students learned how baseball became America's pastime, Robinson's trailblazing achievements against the backdrop of United States history, and his role as a champion for racial, social, and economic equality. The day ended at Metlife Stadium, watching the NY Mets defeat the Washington Nationals 9-8.

She has an energetic and charismatic presence that lifts all of the voices around her to new heights. In this installment of Tannery Sessions, Wanda Wanda collaborates with over 20 Darrow students in an epic version of 'Natural Woman."

Yesterday, Darrow was thrilled to welcome @shakeandco's touring Romeo & Juliet company to the Mountainside. Students were able to see the production on our very own stage before participating in a workshop where they were able to ask questions and even try out a few of Shakespeare's lines!

The Visual Art Department is excited to announce the selection of Z '25 and Henry '24 artworks for the Columbia Greene Community College Juried High School Art Students Show.
Z's work was a modeled dollhouse where each room was intricately detailed. Henry's selected piece was a large figurative charcoal drawing.
We are thrilled for both of their artworks to represent Darrow at the exhibit. We are also excited to announce that at the opening reception, Z received an honorable mention for his piece.
""I created a miniature house titled self-portrait. The piece received an Honorable Mention and a cash prize which I plan to put into my typewriter fund. One of the judges said, 'it was touching, narrative, and will stick with me for a while.' " Z

Students at Darrow have the opportunity to take a history and psychology course called "Social Animals." This year, there were 14 projects in which students went out and examined their community, presenting on a variety of things, including mental health, scheduling, and music, among other topics. Ashley Tinkle, who teaches the course, describes it as "...a huge wonderful process of what can we do to make Darrow the best place it can be."

As we continue to build a climate that helps us grow toward justice for all, Darrow came together yesterday to commemorate and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Students and Faculty created a thought-provoking program focused on Black joy and excellence. Activities included a panel, concert, guest artists and speakers, and workshops to celebrate and appreciate our differences, learn from each other, and grow!

Woo-hoo, our Hands-to-Work Program has been awarded a Beehive Grant! 🐝 The Whole Kids Foundation grant, in partnership with @thebeecause , allows Darrow to receive support for educational beehives and bee programming. Our very own Hands-to-Work Coordinator, John Doan, will collaborate with a local beekeeper from Columbia County Beekeepers Club - New York to plan the installation and care of the hive at Darrow School. Students can observe bees up close and learn about these pollinators' vital role in our food system, enhance STEAM skills and develop a lifetime love of conservation and environmental stewardship. Darrow Theater Workshop invites you to a preview performance of their fall youth-devised piece, 'Simple Gifts?', which explores the narratives and stories of Shaker youth. Throughout the student ensemble's collaborative process, they sought to experience these events and share and reflect on their own while using improvisation to connect with the past, present, and future. The performance will take place Friday, November 4, from 3 to 4 pm as a "Shaker Daily Special" in the Meeting Room at Hancock Shaker Village and included in the cost of admission. We hope to see you there!

Students joined the @ShakerMuseum work crew helping clear weeds inside the incredible Great Stone Barn. They volunteered at @abcclothingsale, sorting clothes for their ABC shop and the Williams College “Give it Up” initiative. And spent time at the #BerkshireFoodProject, helping prep and serve lunches to those in need.
