Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a Minor in Educational Studies, Swarthmore College

Katie Sauvain serves as the English Department Chair at Darrow, now in her sixth year at the school. With a deep passion for literature, education, and student development, Katie brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her role. Before joining Darrow, she taught in a variety of educational settings, including a magnet school in Philadelphia, an elite girls' school in Palo Alto, and an artsy progressive school near Boston. Each of these experiences has shaped her dynamic and inclusive teaching style.

Katie’s academic credentials include a Master’s degree in English Literature from the prestigious Middlebury Bread Loaf School of English. In addition to her advanced degree, she has earned National Board Certification, a mark of excellence in teaching that reflects her commitment to providing transformative learning experiences for her students.

Throughout her career, Katie has also focused on deepening her skills in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work, as well as mentoring early-career teachers. Her dedication to fostering inclusive learning environments and supporting colleagues in their professional growth underscores her belief in the power of education to create positive change.

At Darrow, Katie continues to inspire students with her passion for English literature while creating a classroom environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and meaningful dialogue. Her leadership in the English Department reflects her commitment to excellence and her vision for shaping thoughtful, engaged learners.
