Academic Mentorship Program

Academic Mentorship is exactly what it sounds like: a program of one-on-one educational training sessions that enable students to produce superior academic work. It may also include independent study.

In the same sense that personal athletic training catalyzes better sports performance, Academic Mentorship brings out the highest levels of effort and achievement in scholastic pursuits. It’s advanced learning through hard work, strong support, and ongoing discussion, and assessment of progress.

Academic Mentors are teachers who identify each student’s learning preferences, environmental preferences, language barriers, personal learning history, long-term goals, and determine how to establish a road map for achievement.

The Student-Mentor Partnership

In Academic Mentorship, students and mentors are partners working toward the same goal. Each has a set of responsibilities, and each one learns to count on the other. The principle at work is shared effort and shared success.

When students want to enhance their academic pursuits beyond the courses we offer, they can work one-on-one with their Academic Mentor to define an area of study, design a program with structure and goals, and work toward its completion independently.

Academic Mentorship in Action

The subject matter of Academic Mentorship may involve any area of study at Darrow. Regardless of the topic, three key program elements are observed:

1. Goals are established and connected to strategies for reaching them.
2. Technology is incorporated to facilitate workflow and build technical literacy.
3. Time-management skills are reviewed, including how to estimate the time required to complete a task, and how to create the right conditions for doing one’s best work.
